Below is an update on Kassier Road and the upgrade process that has caused frustration and inconvenience for residents, commuters and businesses, for which we sincerely apologise.
This is one of the most complex road projects undertaken in the city. From the start, the project has had to deal with tough ground conditions, unexpected heavy rains, and, more recently, a change to the construction of the M13 bridge. This change is from the initial “bridge jacking” solution to building 2 brand-new bridges, which ensures a better long-term solution. This does come with additional approvals, and this has further added to the delays.
CONTINUED INVESTMENT
While progress has been slower than we would all like, the investment for the long-overdue upgrade remains a top priority. With the R1.5 billion retail and lifestyle destination of Westown Square now open — and Balwin’s 1,200-unit residential development under construction, the road upgrade is recognised as critical infrastructure to unlock the full R15 billion Westown precinct. The City and all project partners have reaffirmed their commitment to completing the entire upgrade through a necessary phased approach.
In the meantime, with four lanes of traffic between Cliffdale and the N3 in place, interim measures such as new traffic lights are being implemented to improve traffic flow and ease congestion.
Kassier Road is being built not just as an upgrade, but as a long-term piece of infrastructure to support, not only one of the most significant new investment nodes in the region, but the greater Hillcrest/Assagay sub-region. The work is complex, but it is progressing, and we appreciate your continued patience and support as we deliver a lasting benefit for all who live, work, and travel through this developing new region.
